Student Opportunities
for Academic Research
Travel Proposals:
SOAR funds can be used to defray registration fees, and travel, hotel
and
food expenses when students present the results of their scholarly work
at
a meeting. During one academic
year no student may receive more
than $300 total for travel expenses
from
the SOAR program. (The lone exception is travel to the NCUR meeting, which
is covered in full, since it is important to travel as a group to
NCUR.) The meeting must be a state, regional, or
national
meeting that accepts student presenters. SOAR Travel
Proposals may be submitted for work that
was
not supported by a SOAR
research proposal; for example, if the
student is reporting on work done for an Honors project
or an independent study project, travel to the meeting will still be
covered
by SOAR.
The travel proposal should be submitted
electronically to the SOAR coordinator four
weeks before the anticipated travel. The proposal should list
the
name of the student, the student's current GPA, the title of the
paper/poster/performance
to be given, the name of the meeting and organizing body,
and the date
and location of the meeting. The faculty member submitting
the proposal
should explain the origin of the student's work (Honor, independent
study,
etc) and the role the faculty member played in that work. The
proposal
should contain an abstract of the paper and, if possible, a copy of the
letter from
the
organizing body indicated that the paper was accepted. The
proposal
should include an estimate of travel expenses.
SOAR travel proposals are approved by the SOAR
coordinator
with the advice and consent of the SOAR committee.
